Dietmar Haug

For more than 40 years Dietmar Haug has been advising German and foreign companies, universities, research institutes, private inventors as well as startups in national and international IP matters and has been assisting and representing them before the German and European patent and trademark offices and courts to acquire, enforce and defend IP rights, deal with issues of infringement and take defensive measures against attacks based on IP rights of third parties.

During this time he participated in many proceedings concerning the validity and infringement of IP rights before the courts in Germany, in other European countries, in the US (also ITC proceedings), in Japan and Korea as well as in proceedings to take evidence (discovery) in these countries.

In this context he dealt mainly with technological developments in the car and aircraft industry, medical device industry, in the manufacture of paper, textiles and clothing, and in the fields of process engineering, concrete formwork engineering, mechanical and agricultural engineering.

After he was awarded the academic degree of “Diplom-Ingenieur” (graduate engineer) in aeronautical engineering from the University of Stuttgart he worked as a patent and trademark professional at first in an English law firm in London and thereafter in the patent department of a large German company in Munich where he was also trained to become a German and European patent attorney.

From 1981 to 2013 he was a partner and co-founder of an internationally active patent law firm in Munich. During this period of time he represented mainly German, British and North American companies in proceedings before the German Patent and Trade Mark Office, the Federal Patent Court (BPatG), the Federal Court of Justice (BGH) and the European Patent Office.

Additionally he obtained the “Certificate in Intellectual Property Law” from Queen Mary College in London and the degree of “Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Intellectual Property “ from Fernuniversität Hagen.

Since 2014 he has been active as Senior IP Counsel in Germany and abroad at first for the firm KNH Patentanwälte and since 2020 for the firm karo IP Patentanwälte to advise its clients.

Main focus

Advising inventors, universities, small and large industrial companies from Germany and abroad, in particular from the UK, USA and Canada, in all fields that involve the protection of industrial property rights, in particular in obtaining, defending and enforcing patents as well as trademarks and designs. Preparing expert opinions on validity and infringement of industrial property rights. Participation in patent infringement lawsuits in courts in Germany and abroad. Negotiating and drafting patent and trademark license agreements.
